What is leaky gut ?

Leaky gut syndrome is a medical condition related to the digestive system, where the intestinal lining leaks and allows toxins and bacteria to pass into the bloodstream. While leaky gut syndrome is not a recognized medical diagnosis, further research in this area can improve understanding of how bacteria and toxins permeate into the bloodstream, potentially impacting conditions like Crohn's disease.

What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?

The term “leaky gut” refers to damage to the gut lining for various reasons. The stomach and intestines contain digestive enzymes and healthy gut bacteria that break down nutrients from food and water into absorbable molecules for energy, growth, and repair. The intestinal walls allow water and nutrients to pass into the bloodstream while preventing harmful substances from entering. This selective permeability is known as intestinal permeability.

Chronic increases in intestinal permeability are usually referred to as leaky gut syndrome, where bacteria, toxins, and even food particles enter the bloodstream.

Why does this happen?

This problem can occur due to various reasons. However, the most notable among them are:

  2. Dysbiosis: The gut contains both good and bad bacteria. Good bacteria help maintain balance in the body by combating harmful bacteria. However, an imbalance can lead to this condition.

In some cases, there are no symptoms of this problem, but in many cases, the following symptoms are observed:

  1. Digestive Issues: Leaky gut can cause bloating, constipation, diarrhea, especially after consuming excessive sweets, refined carbohydrates, and saturated fats. Allergies to certain foods can also contribute to this problem.

  2. Skin Issues: Intestinal problems can manifest on the skin, leading to rashes and conditions like eczema. Nutrient deficiencies, such as omega-3 fatty acids, can worsen due to impaired absorption caused by leaky gut.

  3. Joint Pain: Toxins entering the bloodstream through leaky gut can cause inflammation, leading to joint pain.

  4. Fatigue: Nutrient deficiencies from a leaky gut can result in extreme fatigue.

  5. Mood Disorders: Research indicates a connection between gut health and mood disorders.

What to Eat for a Leaky Gut Diet:

In this case, you should maintain a healthy diet. A proper diet and a good lifestyle can prevent these diseases. Here, I give some food that is good for a leaky gut diet:

Probiotic: Probiotic food is very beneficial for leaky gut patients. Probiotic food can help grow good gut bacteria in our gut and heal our gut. You can start your day by eating curd rice or kanji rice; these foods are good sources of probiotics. Also, some probiotic foods, like kefir, raw cheese, and butter, can be eaten as probiotics.

Fermented food: Fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, and miso contain organic acids that balance intestinal pH and probiotics to support gut health.

Fiber food: Apples, bananas, oats, strawberries, pears, and avocados are fiber-rich foods that can help with a leaky gut problem. Be aware that if you consume too much fiber at once, it can cause issues like constipation. Start with a little and increase the amount day by day.

Some patients have problems with dairy products. Consuming dairy products can increase their problems. So, when you consume these products, first check if there is a problem. If so, avoid these products.

Limit ultra-processed food. These foods are very unhealthy for your gut. It is good to avoid these foods.

Alcohol and caffeine can damage your gut.

Refined oil should be avoided.

Exercise daily, ensuring you sleep at least 7-8 hours a day, and consuming 7-8 glasses of water to hydrate your body can improve your gut health.
